The Yerby Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Applications are now being accepted for the Yerby Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. Applicants to the Yerby program should advance the goal of increasing the diversity of young scholars pursuing university-based careers in public health. Each Yerby fellow works closely with a senior mentor with compatible research interests and receives additional training in all the domains critical to academic success.

This appointment is for one year, beginning September 1, 2011, and is renewable for a second year. The salary is $62,000 plus benefits, with a $3,500 supplemental budget for travel expenses and research. The application deadline is November 1, 2010.

Battelle’s Health and Life Sciences Division is currently seeking a Senior Health Behavior Research Leader. This position located in Baltimore, MD.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Organizes and leads successful research projects in strategic areas (current emphasis on tobacco smoking and human exposure to tobacco products), or with strategic clients, and provide support for a number of exempt and nonexempt staff. Is accountable for high quality deliverables, satisfied clients, and sound financial management.
  • Organizes and leads successful proposal efforts for projects (through the formulation, proposal and submission of competitive grants and contracts) in strategic specialty areas.
  • Contributes substantially to planning and executing marketing and project development activities in specialized area within established budget.
  • Demonstrates initiative in conceiving ideas for research programs and projects and contributes to the development of a strategic plan to grow and sustain a successful research group.
  • Actively engages in outstanding research and publication in an area of specialization.

THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:

  • A doctoral degree (PhD, MD) in a relevant health-related discipline such as social sciences, behavioral science, biological science, nursing, education, public health or medicine.
  • At least 15 years related research experience in the areas of tobacco, stress, substance use/abuse, health behaviors, or clinical science.
  • Must be nationally recognized as an expert in the area of specialization as evidenced by numerous peer-reviewed publications, participation in professional organizations and national meetings.
  • Current grant funding in the area of tobacco, stress, substance use/abuse, or other health behaviors preferred.

ASU-MAYO CLINIC POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN BEHAVIORAL ONCOLOGY

The Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in behavioral oncology. This 2-year training, conducted collaboratively with the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center in Arizona, will prepare the fellow for an independent research career focused in disparities related to behavioral cancer prevention, early detection, and/or survivorship. The transdisciplinary program of study will be tailored to the individual and will include didactic training and interaction with research mentors, and participation in the design, implementation and dissemination aspects of funded research studies. Current research interests of faculty are: disparities in early detection of breast, cervical and colorectal cancer, community-based trials, cancer survivorship and caregiver support. Applicants must have an earned terminal degree (e.g. Ph.D., Ed.D., Sc.D., D.P.H. or M.D.) in education, nursing , public health, social sciences, or medicine by the fellowship start date, and be committed to a career in disparity-related behavioral oncology research. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Stipends and benefits will be commensurate with experience.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

The University of Southern California School of Medicine, Department of Preventive Medicine, Division of Health Behavior, seeks candidates for two- to three- year research fellowships funded by the National Cancer Institute. Fellows have an opportunity to work on ongoing research projects as well as to work on projects of their own design. Research includes: etiology of cancer; prevention of tobacco and other substance abuse; translation of basic research from multiple disciplines into new, synergistic applications in tobacco and drug abuse prevention; built environment and community approaches to health promotion; prevention research into childhood obesity; promotion of physical activity and healthy eating behaviors; measurement and assessment of health-related behavior and behavioral issues in epidemiology; neurogenetics of obesity and/or tobacco and alcohol abuse.

Other areas of research include: health disparities, AIDS/STDs, psychoneuroimmunological approaches to stress, intervention design, and/or the application of innovative measurement and analytical approaches (e.g. spatial mapping, multi-level analyses) applicable to cancer prevention.

Depending on area of expertise, fellows may be engaged in integrative research bridging two or more disciplines and departments, e.g., epidemiology and geography, or psychology and physiology. Candidates should have a strong background in health behavior research, cognitive science, psychology, psychoneuroimmunology, health disparities or global health, or in other disciplines with strong potential for innovative applications in prevention.

(Of the USC postdoctoral fellows who completed training over the last 10 years, 73 percent hold faculty posts while all the others are engaged primarily in research at universities, or at health related private research institutes. Several have held administrative director positions at NIH or CDC.)

Qualified individuals must have completed a PhD, MD or equivalent, and must be a US citizen or have permanent resident status. Annual salary is based upon year doctorate received. Health insurance, tuition, and conference travel provided.

Behavioral Informatics Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
Boston University School of Medicine

Boston University School of Medicine is seeking applications for a two-year post-doctoral fellowship. The Boston-Area Biomedical Informatics Program (http://www.bmiboston.org/) is a behavioral informatics program is internationally recognized for its excellence. The Fellowship offers training in the broad discipline of behavioral informatics with a focus on training in interventional informatics (the study of the use of computers and other information technologies in the direct delivery of behavioral health services). The faculty is known for the development and evaluation of a wide range of automated interventions that promote self-care in patients with chronic disease and that reduce behavioral risk factors for disease (e.g., diet, physical activity, smoking, alcohol and drug use, etc.). Fellows receive full tuition to receive didactic education in a Harvard-based masters degree program in biomedical informatics, in which the masters has four unique tracks allowing coursework to be tailored to meet diverse learning needs in computer science, public health, health communications, behavioral medicine or other curricula. Fellows complete one or more research projects involving the development and/or evaluation of informatics systems. The Fellowship requires a PhD, MD or equivalent degree. A background in public health, psychology, health communications or medicine and a strong interest in information technology are desirable. US citizenship or permanent residency is required.

Director, Community Engaged Research

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN seeks a Director for the Office of Community- Engaged Research within the Center for Translational Science Activities. The Office of Community-Engaged Research supports and coordinates all research-related community activities at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.  The Director is responsible for the general oversight and direction of the office, and plays a leadership role in assisting investigators to conceptualize, develop and conduct community-engaged research.  The Director develops tactical plans for outreach to involve communities in the research process and evaluates plan implementation procedures and outcomes. The Director leads and manages the development of research initiatives with research teams, with other medical centers, and with community organizations.  The Director serves as lecturer and mentor for training programs in community-engaged research, cultural competence and health disparities research to strengthen the research capabilities of clinical investigators, support staff, fellows and medical students. The Director should possess a doctoral degree in public health, health services research, clinical epidemiology, medical sociology, cultural anthropology or other health related sciences field. Must have experience in clinical research or health sciences research; familiarity with community organizations, diverse cultures, health disparities concepts, plus experience in developing collaborative work relationships with research institutions and community groups.

Health Psychology and Primary Care Psychology Positions

The Department of Psychology at Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC) is recruiting for health psychology and primary care psychology positions. In some positions, travel within the US is required and for those positions, a retention allowance is available. Qualifications include licensure in any US state, a Ph.D. or Psy.D. degree from an APA approved program, with an APA approved internship. Health psychology positions require additional training and experience. Experience in working with diabetes, chronic pain, or sleep disordered populations are highly desirable. The 2010 salary range at the GS-13 level is $87306-$113496. Qualified applicants may also be eligible for a recruitment/retention allowance.

The Department of Psychology at MAMC is a leader in the field of military psychology research and the application of empirically based treatments for Service Members and their families.
