Outlook: Newsletter of the Society of Behavorial Medicine

Fall 2023

Editor's Note

Linda Trinh, PhD; Editor, Outlook

Now that abstract submissions are closed and preparations are underway for the 2024 Annual Meeting, I cannot wait to see all of the exciting and stimulating sessions. This year’s meeting theme is "Moving Behavioral Science Upstream." Notably, this happens to be an emerging theme of this Fall’s Outlook issue.

We feature articles on how to engage community partners to enhance research collaborations to impact health outcomes at multiple levels; trauma- and violence-informed care that considers the intersecting impacts of systemic and interpersonal violence and structural inequities; strategies to improve equity and inclusion in Health Service Psychology Internships; and culturally tailored interventions for chronic disease management. These articles send a key message that intervening across multiple levels has the greatest chance of success for better health.

In the Climate Change and Health Corner, the number of extreme weather events is on the rise globally. This past summer alone, we saw climate change roaring ahead with floods, wildfires, and record-breaking temperatures as a few examples. Two articles are featured on how these extreme weather events impact youth, families, and individuals with chronic diseases.

Finally, we are always open to new ideas and suggestions from our members. If you have ideas for the newsletter, please reach out to me at linda.trinh@utoronto.ca

Enjoy the autumn season!
