Outlook: Newsletter of the Society of Behavorial Medicine

Winter 2023

Editor's Note

Linda Trinh, PhD; Editor, Outlook

Echoing the President’s sentiments that this time of the year signifies a period of reflection on milestones, achievements, and the path forward, this issue is all about personal reflections and perspectives from advocates, researchers, and trainees. One of the key components to reflections is writing an effective personal statement, where there is often little formalized training. The good news is that we have an article dedicated to strategies and tips for putting your best foot forward.

The Climate Change and Health corner features a climate change advocate turned researcher who leverages this expertise to address research priorities in this area. We also hear from leading experts about research gaps and career advice in area of behavioral medicine and palliative care; obesity and eating disorders; and multiple health behavior change and multi-morbidities.

Speaking of the path forward, I am particularly excited about the new initiative from the Membership Council to support students and trainees with reduced membership rates and introductory offers for new members. This is an excellent avenue to build and retain the next generation of researchers so be sure to check out this article.

We also highlight the award experience and lessons learned from our 2022-23 Bridging the Gap Research Award Winners (Dr. Jessica Rivera and Dr. Maricarmen Vizcaino). Learn more about their post-doctoral research and how this award may be beneficial to you.

I hope you all have a wonderful, restful, and active holiday season!
