Social Media Research Ethics

Dr. Pagoto and Dr. Nebeker discussed the following questions.

How has the Cambridge Analytica scandal affected social media research practices?

What are the current gaps in IRBs pertaining to social media research? How can we fix the gaps?

How do you assess risk in social media studies during ethics/IRB review? What do you look for as a reviewer?

Some people who post publicly on social media platforms do not realized that this content can be used for research. Some do not want it to be used in this way. Knowing this, what are our responsibilities as researchers?

What is the responsibility of funders, journals, and universities to prevent even inadvertent ethical violations among researchers? What standards and/or mandatory training if any is needed?
